Theatre workshop for a community mental health

 

The project was born in 2019 under the name “Normale è Noioso” within Recovery.net, a project funded in the 4th edition of the “Community Welfare” call for proposals by Fondazione Cariplo. The project operated in the provinces of Brescia and Mantua and gathered a partnership of public and private entities, with the involvement of at least 100 operators in favor of a caring apporach towards users with mental disorders based on relationships and co-production, taken as active participation of users and family members in the structure of services. A number of entities between Brescia, Montichiari, Mantua, Castiglione and the Rems collaborated on the initiative: among them Oltre la Siepe, which today is responsible for the continuation of the project together with the Cooperative.

The 2020-21 edition of “Normale è Noioso” suffers a natural setback due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The activities remain included in Recovery.net and continue online; we return to presence as soon as social and health restrictions allow it. The workshop is even enriched with some side activities, also within Recovery.net:

• workshop and performance by Teatro Magro as part of Metamorfosi Festival 2020, at the cloister of Teatro Santa Chiara in Brescia;
• performance by users within the Recovery Festival, held in the historic center of Mantua in October 2020 during World Mental Health Day.

The workshop also receives support from “Connessioni,” a project funded by Regione Lombardia. In June 2021, a final demonstration entitled “Time to Time” is held at Teatro Magro’s Home.

From 2021 the workshop continues in collaboration with Oltre la Siepe ODV, and for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 annuals receives funding from Fondazione Comunità Mantovana, Banca Intesa and Fondazione BAM, changing its name to “Fuori dal Comune.”
The 2021-22 edition ends with the outcome entitled “Famous,” which is also repeated in October 2022 at Spazio Sant’Orsola. The 2022-23 edition ends with the outcome titled “Brainstorming,” held at Arci Tom, with an excerpt presented during the “Mental Health Festival” in October 2023.

The workshop doubles in the 2023-24 edition, funded by Fondazione BAM and Fondazione Comunità Mantovana. In fact, a Propedeutic course is activated at the Home of Teatro Magro, and an Advanced one at Arci Tom in Mantua. An open class is held in December 2023, and the workshops end in June 2024 with two final outcomes. The outcome of the Advanced group, “Scintilla,” replicates in October 2024 during the “Festival of Mental Health”.

The project continues in 2024-2025 with one workshop at Arci Tom in Mantua, thanks to the contribution of Fondazione Comunità Mantovana.
