4DΔ

4DΔ is a cultural cooperation project promoted by the 4D Teatro network – composed of Teatro Magro, Teatro all’Improvviso, Ars Creazione e Spettacolo and Carrozzeria Orfeo – in collaboration with the Umberto Artioli Foundation – Mantua European Capital of Entertainment. Funded by Fondazione Cariplo, the project was born to address the critical issues facing the Mantua theater scene, characterized by strong artistic richness but also by fragmented offerings, limited audience circulation, and poor integration between institutional theater and independent entities.

Active in the two-year period 2026–2027, 4DΔ aims to qualify and renew the city’s theatrical offering through an integrated programming, capable of creating a structured dialogue between the Teatro Sociale of Mantua and the local contemporary theatre companies. The goal is to build a recognizable, inclusive, and sustainable cultural ecosystem capable of enhancing diverse artistic poetics and expanding and diversifying audiences, with particular attention to young people and the so-called “non-public”.

The project is based on a shared strategy that focuses on cooperation between partners, networking spaces, and sharing production processes. Through co-productions, coordinated programming, artistic residencies, and new event formats, 4DΔ transcends the logic of a single season or space, proposing a widespread theatrical system that fosters the circulation of spectators and strengthens the cultural identity of the area.

A central element of the project is the relationship with the public. 4DΔ strengthens and expands the model of Mobile Spectators, citizens actively involved in the processes of viewing, comparing, and evaluating performances, and develops cultural mediation actions designed to bring new segments of the population closer to theatrical enjoyment. Relationships with the public thus become an integral part of the artistic process, helping to create a more aware and participatory cultural community.

The project also devotes specific attention to environmental sustainability, integrating the practices and tools developed under the European Greenstage project. By measuring environmental impact, adopting shared best practices, drafting a code of behavior for partners and suppliers, and organizing an international conference, 4DΔ promotes a responsible, concrete, and replicable model of cultural production and enjoyment.

Another fundamental axis concerns the international dimension. The hospitality of foreign companies, artistic residencies, and the showcase of Mantua’s productions in international contexts foster the exchange of expertise, openness to new languages, and Mantua’s positioning within European cultural networks. In this sense, 4DΔ helps strengthen the visibility of local realities and consolidate lasting relationships beyond national borders.

Finally, communication represents a strategic element of the project. 4DΔ develops a shared communication strategy, with a coordinated visual identity and integrated digital and traditional tools, capable of uniting the plurality of artistic experiences involved. Photographic and video documentation of the activities becomes part of the project itself, as a tool for memory, dissemination, and evaluation of the cultural impact generated.

4DΔ is thus configured as a system project, which aims to consolidate a stable territorial network, create lasting cultural value and offer a virtuous model of collaboration between institutions, companies and communities. A project that looks to the future of theatre as a space for encounter, innovation and shared responsibility.
