Greenstage – when theatre meets sustainability

2025

The 4D network, which includes four contemporary theater companies in Mantua – Teatro Magro, Teatro all’improvviso, Carrozzeria Orfeo, and Ars Creazione e Spettacolo – is joining the Municipality of Mantua in a European adventure focused on environmental innovation. Greenstage is a European project that challenges the theater world to rethink its impact on the planet.

The project starts from a renewed vision of performing arts where every movement, every scenographic choice, every technical aspect is designed with deep ecological awareness. This is the vision that unites theaters, municipal administrations, and partners from five European countries: a network determined to build a greener cultural future.

The beating heart of Greenstage is the development of SAPA, a revolutionary self-assessment tool that will allow theater operators to analyze and transform their production practices. It’s not just about reducing the carbon footprint, but about triggering a profound cultural change.

The first fruits of this journey will be two “Zero Waste” productions – in Oberhausen and Riga – that will become concrete case studies of theatrical sustainability. A living laboratory where good intentions become tangible actions.

But Greenstage goes further. By involving policy makers, local administrators, and stakeholders, the project aims to generate a cross-cutting dialogue capable of producing concrete recommendations for a more responsible cultural sector.

Funded by the Creative Europe program, Greenstage represents a bet on theater’s ability to be not only a mirror of society but a driver of change.

The first results will be available from January 2025 on the website www.greenstage.eu, an appointment not to be missed for all those who believe in a more sustainable cultural future.
