4D TEATRO
2021 - ongoing
Contemporary theater network and programme
4D TEATRO is a local network offering theatrical and performance events, workshops and meetings curated by Teatro Magro, ARS Creazione e Spettacolo, Carrozzeria Orfeo and Teatro all’Improvviso: four established theater companies in Mantua united to promote contemporary drama and bring audiences back to social life by making them an active part of the cultural proposal. The project emerged from the need of the four involved companies, which have been working in the field of Live Performing Arts (contemporary theater) for 10-20-30 years on a local, national and international level, to cooperate in order to propose a network of cultural offerings differentiated by places, targets and functions. The Cabina di Regia puts theater at the center as a function of the spectator, to create a multidisciplinary schedule of events, performances, workshops, residencies, and theatrical productions.
Launched in 2021 thanks to funding from Fondazione Cariplo as part of Emblematico Minore call, the project has continued in the following years thanks to local, regional and national funds: Fondazione BAM – Banca Agricola Mantovana, Tea Group, Regione Lombardia, Ministry of Culture – FNSV (Fondo Nazionali Spettacolo dal Vivo).
The project has the following general objectives:
- Fostering aggregation, confrontation, exchange, growth of civic sense among people, openness to the world, development of greater awareness of self and others through the elaboration of new cultural experiences.
- Providing opportunities for aggregation and culturally meaningful experiences through guided attendance at performing arts venues and thus foster social cohesion.
- Encouraging increased cultural participation with paths aimed at audience involvement and the enhancement of their interests.

Edition 2024
The 4D TEATRO programme continues with the 2024 edition. The project hosts some important representatives of the contemporary theater scene, who present their works in the spaces of the partner institutions, thanks to the support of the Municipality of Mantua, the Lombardy Region and the BAM Foundation.
The review is also enriched by some initiatives produced on the occasion of the inauguration of the Museum at the Palazzo del Podestà dedicated to Virgil. With the project “Virgilio Me Genuit,” financed by the MIC – Ministry of Culture under the FNSV 2024 – Special Projects 2024 call for proposals, the four realities of 4D Teatro produced and realized artistic interventions related to the figure of Virgil specifically for the spaces of the city, with a special focus on the Palazzo del Podestà – the current new home of the museum. The intent was to deepen the relationship between art and territory, and to highlight how Virgil’s work helped shape the perception of humanity and its connection with nature.

A second series of events enriched the season by more directly enhancing the city of Mantua and transforming it from INVISIBLE (immersed in fog) to VISIBLE: visible to the largest audience possible. These events were created with the support of the FNSV (Fondo Nazionale Spettacolo dal Vivo), an important recognition from the Ministry of Culture, and thanks to the patronage of the Municipality of Mantua.
Starting from the celebration of the birth of Italo Calvino, a chorus of artistic activities and actions allowed an ever-increasing number of spectators to deepen their knowledge of the city’s historical-cultural spaces. A fundamental part of the project was the challenge launched to the partners to produce new shows and performances inspired by Calvino’s works and a shared schedule of the four realities was created, inspired by several texts by the author. Below is the program of events.
